Multimedi releases major update to Arc On Ear headphone interface

Italian audio brand, IK Multimedi has announced version 1.5 of its Arc On Ear DAC and headphone amplifier, which helps music makers and recording engineers calibrate and add corrections and studio simulations for a wide range of headphones.

The new update introduces calibration for 50 popular models of in-ear monitors. With this latest release, Arc On Ear moves beyond traditional over-the-ear headphones and brings the technology to IEMs, turning them into consistent and reliable studio reference monitors.

The Arc On Ear is a portable headphone amplifier and DAC that takes a USB-C feed from a computer and provides digital-to-analog conversion as well as high-end amplification.

The latest version combines precision headphone calibration with advanced spatial processing to deliver a new level of audio accuracy and control that recording engineers, producers and performers can use when working in the studio, traveling on tour or performing live.

For touring musicians, live engineers and mobile producers, this new version means the same pair of IEMs they use on stage or on the road can be used as a trusted mixing reference.

There’s no need to carry a separate pair of studio headphones just for mixing, as the acoustic seal of IEMs means users get more effective isolation, which is handy when working in noisy environments such as planes, trains or live venues. The upshot is a more consistent and dependable critical listening experience.

Arc On Ear applies a precise calibration to a pair of headphones or IEMs as well as advanced spatial processing, transforming IEMs and headphones into a precision monitoring solution. Users can store up to five profiles on the physical device, including different headphone calibrations and custom tonal curves.

Users can instantly switch between settings across a range of listening setups. The software for the Arc On Ear is designed to make it easy to configure and fine-tune the listening experience with support for preset management, tonal shaping and firmware updates.

In-ear monitors behave differently from traditional headphones because they couple directly to the user’s ear canal and are not affected by the shape of the outer ear. Unlike regular headphones, the acoustic seal created by IEMs eliminates variations created by positioning, making IEMs a potentially more controlled and repeatable listening experience.

The sealed design of IEMs offers better isolation, especially in demanding live environments, making them a better choice for recording engineers working on live performances. “With Arc On Ear 1.5, in-ear monitors become a truly reliable reference for professional work,” says Davide Barbi, CTO at IK Multimedia. “For the first time, linear monitors can deliver the consistency and accuracy needed to serve as a true alternative to studio headphones across production, travel, and live environments.”
