The call by the Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, on operators in the sector to embrace smart technology to improve productivity, reduce costs, and remain competitive amid economic challenges is commendable.
Represented by her Special Assistant on Social Development Secretariat, Helen Zamani, at the 13th Annual General Meeting and Public Lecture of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Abuja/Nasarawa/Niger Branch, she urged manufacturers to adopt capital restructuring, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and automation in their operations.
The FCT administration has reiterated its commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses through massive investments in roads, water supply, security and urban renewal. A stronger public-private collaboration will boost local content, innovation, and skills development.
She commended MAN for its steadfast advocacy for Nigeria’s industrial growth.
The sector is battling high energy costs, multiple taxation, insecurity, poor infrastructure and limited access to affordable financing. Bad roads, poor water supply and erratic electricity at Idu Industrial District are also inhibiting growth.
The institutionalization of the “Nigeria First Policy” aimed at promoting locally made goods would be a booster to the sector’s determination to grow.
Technological advancements in the manufacturing sector have shown how the deployment of automation, robots, and artificial intelligence help expedite production while improving accuracy. Big data, IoT, and cloud computing improve decision-making through real-time data analysis, predictive maintenance, and better supply chain management.
