TikTok is building a standalone US app that will operate with its own algorithm and data, distancing it from China.
TikTok is preparing to launch a standalone app for US users that will operate on a distinct algorithm and data system separate from its global platform, according to insiders familiar with the project.
This move could pave the way for a potential sale influenced by US President Donald Trump’s administration.
Over recent months, TikTok staff have worked under tight deadlines to duplicate and transfer the app’s codebase—including AI models, features, algorithms, and user data—from the global version to build the US-specific platform, current employees told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Known internally as “M2,” the initiative has a September deadline and could mark the most significant technical separation between TikTok’s US operations and its international business. This shift is expected to affect how the platform’s 170 million US users access content, as well as how creators outside the US monetise on the app.
The new US-only version is designed to function independently, much like Douyin—the version of TikTok available exclusively in mainland China. According to sources, the American app will not be available in app stores outside the US.
While existing content will migrate to the new app, it remains unclear how much fresh content from the global TikTok network will be integrated. The US version is expected to use only data from American users to train its recommendation algorithms, further distancing itself from TikTok’s global ecosystem. Consequently, most users will primarily see content generated within the US.
ByteDance and TikTok declined to comment on the project. This report marks the first time technical details of the US-specific app have been publicly revealed.
