Toyota recalls 508K Camry Hybrids for blank instrument cluster displays

Toyota Motor North America has recalled 508,000 Camry Hybrid sedans over a software error that can lead to the instrument cluster display to go blank upon startup. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall involves certain model year 2025-2026 Camry Hybrid models produced between August 2024 and June 2026 and equipped with specific software and 7-inch instrument clusters, which Toyota refers to as “combination meters.”

Toyota estimates that 100 percent of the recalled vehicles have the defect while dealers will update the software of recalled vehicles free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed from September 21. The failure of the 7-inch instrument cluster display can also disable the vehicle’s hazard lights, turn signal lamps, seat belt warning system and smart key reminder.

The issue can deprive drivers of critical safety information and inoperable turn signals or hazard warning lights are a safety issue for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota also offers a larger 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster on higher trims of the Camry Hybrid and these models are not affected. Other Toyota and Lexus models are equipped with instrument clusters running a different software version and are also not part of the recall.

Toyota first received reports of blank instrument cluster displays in July 2024. At the time, the automaker sent fieldreturned parts to its Tier 1 supplier Visteon to investigate the concern, but the supplier could not replicate the issue in its initial testing. The clusters were sourced from Visteon’s manufacturing operations in Mexico. Research Newspaper recalls that Toyota and Visteon began investigating additional reports of problems with the 7-inch instrument cluster in October 2025.

The two parties suspected that a software error may occur during the meter’s startup process and “prepared special equipment” to gather more detailed information from vehicles experiencing the problem, per the recall report. The new data gathering process allowed Visteon engineers to induce the software problem during bench testing to try and replicate the blank startup failure. In April 2026, however, Visteon began power cycle bench testing, and the condition did not occur on its own. Toyota and Visteon in June this year began testing the issue on an actual vehicle.
